An unqualified chemist and druggist convicted at Manchester Assizes of the murder of Margaret McKivett (26), who died after he tried to procure her an abortion. On 13 March, Miss McKivett and her mother visited Heap at his shop in West Gorton, Manchester. Heap's housekeeper, Mrs Julia Carroll, watched them go upstairs and claimed she heard them struggle. Later they came down and the women left. Mrs McKivett and Heap met up in a pub later that day and she paid him one pound. During the next few days the woman's condition deteriorated so much that Heap was summoned. He jeeringly told her she musn't die on him, but on 18 March she passed away. Heap was arrested along with his housekeeper, who was later released. Evidence was brought into court that Heap had been involved in a similar case in 1867. and although the victim had recovered, he had still served five years on an attempted murder charge.
